Our Community.

Our community has been a proud part of Edmonton's north end since its development in the 1960s and is recognized as the site of the city's first condominium complex. Today, the Steele Heights Community League carries forward that pioneering spirit by bringing neighbours together in our mature neighbourhood to build a vibrant and welcoming future for all.

Our History

Named in honour of Annie. A York Secord, the history of our neighbourhood is rooted in Edmonton's pioneer heritage. York was a dedicated educator who came to Alberta in 1889, married Richard Secord, a prominent fur trader and merchant, and remained an influential figure in the community until her passing in 1950.

Our neighbourhood began to take shape during the development boom of the 1960s and 1970s, and it holds a distinct place in the city's architectural history as the site of Edmonton's first condominium complex. Today, as the Steele Heights Community League, we proudly serve this historic neighbourhood, maintaining community connections through landmarks like York Park and continuing the spirit of community established by the pioneers who came before us.

York Park
140 Ave and 60 St

Our main, neighbourhood playground, during school hours York Park is utilized by the school for their recess and outdoor time. On the weekends and evenings it's busy with neighbourhood kids playing on the equipment, shooting hoops, sledding, biking or playing soccer. During the summer there is a Green Shack program throughout the weekdays.

One of the newer additions to our neighbourhood, the York Spary Park is the perfect place to cool down on hot, summer days. Enjoyed by community members of all ages it features a gazebo and picnic benches perfect for those who are taking a break from the splash zone or wanting to share a meal at the park.

David Ure Park

This green space is enjoyed by many dogs and their owners in our neighbourhood. It features a variety of trees and shrubs to provide a lovely dose of foliage in the middle of our residential area.

Childcare and Schools

York School

York School is a welcoming K-6 school located in northeast Edmonton that offers both the regular program and a Division site for the Gifted and Talented program, with Spanish as a Second Language taught in Grades 4 to 6 .
